Return of the Poxbringer

Back in 2018, I painted a Poxbringer, which is a minor Nurgle Daemons leader, for Azazel’s long-ended Jewel of July painting challenge. Eventually I decided to take a long break from miniatures and sold off or gave away almost everything I owned, except for some my little daemons. I put them in storage because I couldn’t bear to let them go.

Seven years later, I busted them out once again, but some were nowhere to be found, including my poor Poxbringer, of whom I was rather fond.

He probably got lured away by my plaguebearer with the banner, who is also missing. Oh well, who am I to stand in the way of true love?

Wished he’d left the banner though, because now I need a new one or three.

Anyway, here is the Poxbringer back in 2018, though all that apparently remains are these pictures. Fitting somehow for a daemon of Chaos.

Sadly, him and his orange buddy are lost to the Warp.

When I painted him before, I decided to introduce a new disease into my collection: the dreaded Yellow Mold.

For my Yellow Mold, I liberally applied some acrylic texture fiber paste mixed with a bit Averland Sunset paint to the area in question.  I teased the mixture so it would dry with a sort of furry or spiky texture.  I drybrushed the area around the mold with sunset, and then did another light drybrush with white paint.  I sealed the whole thing with a matte varnish to protect the pasted area, since the miniature will be handled a lot in game play.

Yikes! Looks like that yellow mold is catching.

Above is a rear view of the Poxbringer. Fortunately, I still own the poxwalkers he is posing with above.

I was rather pleased at how the texture came out on his arm.

So now an obligatory, painfully close shot. Steel yourself, John!

I personally propose purple guts are particularly pretty!   🙂

The purple bit is fairly subtle at tabletop distances, but it does add a little variety to the abdominal cavity.  The recipe came from the very useful January 2018 White Dwarf. I wish I still owned that issue, but at least I can still access it online.

I did entitle this post “Return of the Poxbringer” and he is returning or rather one a lot like him will be howling out of the Warp soonish. I am not going to try and recreate the same paint scheme, but he’ll probably end up looking a lot like the old one in some ways. I’m definitely doing the Yellow Mold again.

I’m putting together some plague drones and some of the leftover bits are giving me ideas about minor additions to my new Poxbringer. I don’t know if I’ll modify him at all but if I do, I’ll include him in my next update of what I’ve been putting together.

So another miniature put together for my assembly challenge and now onto my winged cavalry. When I return again, it’ll be with more Daemons and Death Guard I’ve been putting together, which seems like it is going to be my fate at least for a while.

  1. Its a gruesome mini, there’s no doubt! 🙂 There are some nice details to work on though so I imagine it will be fun to repaint this one when the time comes. I’ll be curious to see if you handle painting the new one any differently as well.

Yes, it is pretty gruesome, even as far as a lot of Nurgle miniatures go what with that abdomen cavity, though I put together a Beast of Nurgle that had an interesting internal organ bit that I opted for over the “chest mouth,” which I’ll probably use for the second one once I get it. I want two because I want to get the plaguebearer who is riding a snail because I really love that model. The fact that it can lead beasts is a bonus.

      I’m not sure how I’ll paint it other than green, mostly. I suspect it’ll come out looking a lot like the old one did, though they’ll be some differences. I tried to model all of the diseases I had “invested” up to that time on the model, but I probably won’t do that now. In my old daemon horde he was kind of a major leader, but this time around he’s simply one of many squad leaders since I plan on acquiring and painting all of the minor Nurgle daemon leaders eventually. So no need to make him “Disease Undivided.” 🙂

      I also probably won’t give him the green stuff eyeball or the hand tentacle. It was a good way to use up some stray putty and I think it worked ok, but the miniature seems busy enough to me without needing to be augmented, though I did end up gluing a piece from the Plague Drone kit and doing a little green stuff surgery on him as well after I did this post. I guess I just can’t help myself.

      1. Makes sense on the similar paint scheme. Nurgle tends to be a few select colors to be fair. They are very conversion friendly so you can always individualize them when creativity strikes too! Will you be getting any of the new miniatures that are coming out soon? I don’t like Nurgle at all and have never painted one in my hobby career and even I’m impressed by some of the newer ones GW is creating.

    1. Oh no, that’s weird you can’t see most of the pictures. I wonder why that is? 😦

      You are definitely on a roll with your hobby work. I like the latest crop of painted miniatures you put up; particularly the colors on the backpacks and some of the trousers.

      And the other ones are great too. My favorite is the Librarian with the yellow cape. He’s brilliant. 🙂

      1. At least I’ve still been able to comment, Roger hasn’t been able to do that, I think it’s a bug in WordPress, as it seems to be effecting different sites in different ways
